Origivation Magazine CD Review Hangnail Phillips Wit's End Hangnail Phillips is a golden god. I have begun praying regularly that he and his partner in crime, Monika Bullette, will save the world, or at least continue to share their music with us, cuz, holy shit, this stuff is mind-blowingly good. Influences from all over the world and all over history color Wit's End, making it one of the most complex, gutsy, and experiential albums I've ever heard. It's easily the bravest, most honest record I've heard since I reviewed Bullette's newest album last month. Please do yourself a favor and check out Hangnail's work - on Wit's End he has lain himself out for you to examine wholly, and it's an opportunity one should not miss. In the name of nostalgia and a lightning prod memory of how cool Steve McQueen really is I'll post the flyer from the first gig:

The DAP3 show went swimmingly. Special thanks to Tim Coslar for coordination and $$$ and being a champion of local music. The Invasion have broken up for good and those of you who never saw them missed a terrific live show - listen here.

The News Journal (Delaware) had an expose on Bullette today. Among the many kind things Ryan Cormier wrote: "The impressive mix of shimmering pop, classic rock and techno sounds has introduced the world to Bullette, a genre-defying artist in an area where cover bands thrive and undefinable music usually falls by the wayside." - entire article here
William Bretzger took the photo - click on it for a large version.

Old School Newark Dave McGurgan reviews "The Secrets" and promotes the DAP3 show in one fell swoop.
Excerpt: "Take Bullette for instance. Essentially a one-woman band, Bullette is Monika Bullette who has just released her debut album, “The Secrets.” Songs such as the moody and ethereal “I Can’t Tell You While I’m Smiling” and the slightly raucous “Night Starts Over” are reminiscent of other great little known, but totally worthy artists such as Suzanne Lewis and Azalia Snail. But Bullette is at her best when she keeps things simple, as she does on “Disappearing Act,” which is a Brazilian-infused acoustic ballad that is stunningly subtle and sexy." - full article here
Also: after you've recovered from the DAP3 show, git yerself to New York CBGB's NY Decay's benefit for the animal victims of Katrina - Sunday September 18, 2pm-2 am. - http://nydecay.com/nydecay.htm

The lovely Brenda Stardom, a transplanted American in Portugal, has reviewed "The Secrets". One of the many great lines - "The songs are crafted like a Frank Lloyd Wright or even a Michaelangelo." - the rest here...
I get more than a kick out of this for some reason - esp. the Emin bed one - modern art with little people.

Ryan Cormier of the News Journal came by a BULLETTE practice last night and asked some probing questions. Expect to see some photos and read some answers in Saturday's Delaware paper.

I'm featured in today's Podcast NYC: Podsafe Music! Artist: Bullette Title: Show Me Album: The Secrets Monika Bullette makes glorious indie music. Show Me is a haunting cut with scratchy guitars and a neo-surf music feel. I won't waste anytime trying to further categorize her work. Have a listen for yourself and get ready for sweet musical adventure. Check out Bullette on the web at http://www.bullette.net.

"The Secrets" was nicely reviewed (translation coming soon) in the TWANG! section of the Dutch magazine KINDAMUSIK:
"Toch is The Secrets een plaat die per draaibeurt mooier en interessanter wordt. Wat dat betreft is de titel uitstekend gekozen. Bullettes stem heeft wel wat weg van die van Nancy Sinatra en komt het best tot zijn recht in de opener ‘Show Me’, het uitermate zonnige ‘Don’t Start Believin'’ en het hypnotiserende prijsnummer ‘We Are Not from Sugar.’ Wellicht zou Monika Bullette gebaat zijn bij iets meer uniformiteit, maar vooralsnog dwingen haar experimenteerdrift en onconventionele aanpak wel respect af." - full review here
